What Happens in a Pottery Class at Sunnyside Clay
Our Auckland pottery classes and workshops are designed to be accessible, creative, and genuinely enjoyable, even if you’ve never touched clay in your life.

Here’s what a session looks like:
You’ll learn hand building techniques. This is the most beginner friendly way to make pottery. This means you can create a wide range of shapes (cups, bowls, plates, decorative pieces) without needing a wheel, and can make multiple pieces in a single session.
You’ll paint and personalise your work using our range of glazes, letter stamps, and cookie cutters so every piece you make is completely unique to you.
We take care of the rest. Your pieces stay with us for glazing and kiln firing. You collect them 3–4 weeks later, fully finished and food safe, ready to actually use at home.
What’s Included
- All clay and materials
- Step by step guidance throughout
- Glazing and kiln firing
- Collection of finished pieces 3–4 weeks later
- Good music, good vibes, and a relaxed atmosphere

How Long Are the Classes?
Sessions run for approximately 3 hours. This gives you enough time to build, decorate, and personalise multiple pieces without feeling rushed.

Who Are Our Classes For?
Sunnyside Clay pottery classes are popular with:
Beginners and first timers. Most of our students have never done pottery before. Our classes are built around that. You’ll get clear guidance from the start and help whenever you need it.
Couples looking for a date idea in Auckland. Pottery is hands on, creative, and a little bit funny when things go sideways. It makes for a genuinely memorable date that’s different from dinner and a movie.
Friend groups and birthday celebrations. Bring 2 or 12 friends. We keep classes small and personal, but can accommodate group bookings with advance notice.
Hens parties. A relaxed, creative alternative to the usual hens activities. We can personalise the experience for your group, get in touch to organise something special.
Team building in Auckland. Pottery is brilliant for teams. It’s collaborative, low pressure, and gives people a reason to laugh together. We offer private studio sessions for corporate groups.
Solo creatives. Come alone, meet other creative people, and spend a few hours making something with your hands. It’s a surprisingly meditative experience.

Hand Building vs Wheel Throwing
Many people search for wheel throwing classes and it’s a fair question. At Sunnyside Clay, we focus on hand building techniques rather than the pottery wheel.
Here’s why:
- Hand building lets you make more pieces in one session
- It’s genuinely accessible for complete beginners from minute one
- You get to paint and personalise your work in the same session
- There’s less frustration and more making
If you’ve seen pottery wheels on social media and expected that you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you can create with hand building instead.
