Welcome to Sunnyside Clay! Here are some of the most common questions we get about our pottery classes, workshops and events in Auckland.
Pottery Classes
Do I need any pottery experience?
Not at all! Our pottery workshops are designed for complete beginners. You’ll be guided through the process step by step, so you don’t need to have any previous pottery or artistic experience.
What type of pottery do you teach?
We specialise in hand building pottery, rather than wheel throwing. Hand building is much easier for beginners and allows you to create all kinds of shapes and objects using techniques such as slab building, coiling and sculpting.
You can make anything from mugs, bowls and plates to vases, pet bowls, spoon rests and decorative pieces.
What is included in the pottery class?
Everything you need is included:
- 1kg of white stoneware clay
- Pottery tools
- Underglazes for painting and decorating
- Glazing
- Kiln firing
- Step-by-step guidance
Just bring yourself and wear something you don’t mind getting a little messy!
How long is the pottery workshop?
Our beginner pottery workshops run for approximately 3 hours. This gives you plenty of time to learn the techniques, make your pieces and paint them.
How many pieces can I make?
You can make as many pieces as you like within the class time, using your 1kg of clay. The number of pieces depends on their size and thickness.
Can I make whatever I want?
Yes! That’s one of the fun things about hand building.
You’re welcome to come with your own ideas or use our examples for inspiration. We can help you work out how to turn your idea into something you can actually make with clay.
Do you offer wheel throwing classes?
No. Sunnyside Clay currently focuses on hand building pottery workshops, which are particularly beginner friendly and allow you to make and paint your pieces in the same session.
Your Pottery Pieces
What happens to my pottery after the class?
Once you’ve finished making and decorating your pieces, you’ll leave them with us.
We’ll carefully dry them, glaze them and fire them in our kiln. Once they’re finished, we’ll email you to let you know they’re ready for collection.
When can I collect my finished pottery?
Finished pieces are usually ready for collection approximately 4-5 weeks after your workshop.
Please wait for our email confirming that your pieces are ready before coming to collect them.
Can I use my finished pottery for food and drinks?
Yes! Our pieces are glazed and kiln fired to create finished ceramic pieces suitable for food and drinks. They can be put in the microwave and dishwasher too.Â
However, because handmade pottery can vary depending on its shape, thickness and construction, we recommend treating your pieces with care.
What happens if my piece cracks or breaks in the kiln?
Clay is a natural material and pottery can sometimes crack, warp or break during the drying and firing process, even when it has been made carefully.
While we take every precaution to minimise this risk, we unfortunately can’t guarantee that every piece will survive the firing process.
If your piece becomes non functional due to firing, please get in touch with us and we’ll do our best to help.
What to Bring
What should I wear to a pottery class?
Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting clay on. We recommend avoiding anything delicate or difficult to wash.
We provide the materials and tools you need.
Can I bring food and drinks?
You’re welcome to bring snacks and non alcoholic drinks to enjoy during your workshop.
Please note that alcohol is not permitted at our regular pottery workshops.
Booking & Changes
Can I book a private pottery workshop?
Yes! We offer private pottery experiences for birthdays, hens parties, team building, celebrations and other group events.
You can choose between:
Pottery Making + Painting : Learn to hand build your own pottery pieces and paint them during the session.
Pottery Painting: Choose from pre made pottery pieces and spend a relaxed session painting and decorating them.
For private event enquiries, please contact us with your preferred date, group size and the type of experience you’re interested in.
How many people can I have at a private workshop?
Our studio can accommodate up to 20 people for a private pottery workshop.
For larger groups, we can also bring our pottery painting experience to your venue.
Can children attend?
Our regular public pottery workshops are suitable for ages 13+.
Younger children can attend but need to be accompanied by an adult. If you’re planning a children’s birthday party or family event, get in touch and we’ll help you choose the best option.
Can I reschedule my booking?
If you need to change your booking, please contact us as soon as possible. We’ll always do our best to accommodate you where we can.
Our cancellation and rescheduling terms may vary depending on the type of booking, so please check the terms on your specific booking before cancelling.
What happens if I can’t make it to my class?
Please let us know as soon as possible. If you’re cancelling or rescheduling close to the workshop date, we may not be able to offer a refund unless your place can be filled by someone else.

We’re right in the heart of Ponsonby and easily accessible from Auckland CBD, Grey Lynn, Westmere and Freemans Bay.
Is parking available?
Yes! There is free parking available at Studio One Toi TÅ«, entrance is on Hopetoun Street. Â There is also free street parking nearby on Sundays.
